AQUIA HARBOUR, Va. (AP) — The Stafford County Sheriff’s Department says a 3-year-old girl drowned in a residential pool in Aquia Harbour.

The department said in a news release that on Saturday afternoon, the parent of two children, a girl age 3 and a boy age 2, left the toddlers in the care of an adult acquaintance at the home.

Deputies say the two children went missing from inside the home, and neighbors found the 2-year-old playing outside. Authorities say the acquaintance who was watching the children found the girl unresponsive in the pool.

First responders took the children to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The incident is under investigation.
