Construction is scheduled to begin in late fall on the first phase of a biking and walking trail in Suffolk. The Suffolk Seaboard Coastline Trail will be part of the planned 41-mile South Hampton Roads Trail linking Suffolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. When completed, Suffolk’s trail will run 11-and-a-half miles. The first section to be constructed will be about 3 miles of trail. Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department assistant director Helen Gabriel tells The Virginian-Pilot that the trail will increase recreational opportunities and give commuters a direct path without the hazards of vehicular traffic.
