Colonial Beach – Colonial Beach High School senior, Tamra Ruczynski, was notified on February 5, 2018 that she is the recipient of the 2018 Virginia Interscholastic Administrators Association (VIAAA) Past Presidents’ Leadership Scholarship Award. The $1,500 annual scholarship is presented to one deserving high school student who will be graduating from a Virginia High School League (VHSL) member school or Independent School in honor of all of the VIAAA Past Presidents. In order to nominate a student, the athletic administrator of the school must be a member of the VIAAA in order for the student to qualify for the scholarship. The selection committee evaluated nominees on the qualities of athletic achievement, leadership, and service based on each school’s nomination.
Tamra is a member of the CBHS Class of 2018, and she plans to attend the University of Mary Washington to study psychology in order to become a youth counselor for children who have been adjudicated and those struggling with addiction. Tamra is a student-athlete and multiple letter-winner in volleyball (5 years) and basketball (7 years), a member of the Student Council Association and current class president, a member of the National Honor Society, a committee member for the Class of 2018 Prom, and was a delegate for the Virginia Girls State program, sponsored by the American Legion Auxillary. Tamra has a 3.979 GPA and is slated to graduate with honors and an advanced diploma.
Colonial Beach HS Principal, Jennifer Grigsby, remarked, “Tamra is a remarkable young woman who pushes herself academically, leads by example as a student-athlete, and displays true character in the face of adversity. We are extremely proud of her for winning this prestigious award. She was selected out of applicants from all high schools across the entire Commonwealth of Virginia. She demonstrates Drifter Pride on a daily basis, and we are excited to see what her future holds and how she will continue to serve her community in a positive manner as a leader.”
Tamra will be recognized at the VIAAA Annual Conference at the Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, VA on March 23, 2018. She, her mother, Terri McClure, and CBHS Athletic Director, Martin Astrop, will be attending the reception and luncheon in honor of award recipients.
