Over the weekend there was a groundbreaking for the new St. John Baptist Church at the same location of the old St. John Baptist Church at Mount Landing that was leveled by the tornado on February 24th, 2016.

The church had been there for 145 years before the twister struck and was built 6 years after the Civil War ended.

About 90 members of the church and community, as well as the builder, banker and insurance agent attended the groundbreaking service.

St. John Baptist Church members have been using and attending Sunday church services at the New Hope Seventh Day Adventist Church in Tappahannock, which meets on Saturday since the tornado struck at no charge.

Other churches have offered services and donations. Rappahannock Christian Church has set aside money to buy new pews for St. John, and Rappahannock Baptist Church donated an organ in mint condition.
