NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Past employees of a former Virginia sheriff say that he used the job for personal benefit, such as hiring his future wife’s relatives and having his deputies campaign for him.
The Virginian-Pilot on Sunday quotes former staff members of ex-Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe who say he used deputies as campaign workers and designated drivers. They also say he hired relatives of his future wife. Instances of sexual harassment were also reported.
A spokeswoman for the FBI’s regional office would not comment on whether McCabe is under any type of investigation.
McCabe abruptly resigned in December without explanation after more than two decades. Four months earlier, he said he’d seek a seventh term.
McCabe has denied any wrongdoing. He has not been charged with any crimes and declined to comment to the newspaper.
