The Humane Society of the United States says Virginia has approved a project proposed by the city of Fairfax to reduce the white-tailed deer population through sterilization. The animal protection group says the state Department of Game & Inland Fisheries recently approved the project, which will be the first of its kind in Virginia. The city will work with a contractor to tranquilize does and use a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove their ovaries. The procedure has been done in Baltimore County, Md.; San Jose, Calif.; Town and Country, Mo.; And Cayuga Heights, N.Y. The Humane Society is donating $3,000 to support the project.
