FARMVILLE, Va. – Senior southpaw and two-time Big South Pitcher of the Year Elizabeth McCarthy has been named Big South Pitcher of the Week, while senior shortstop Justina Augustine has been tabbed Player of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.

McCarthy earns her second Big South Pitcher of the Week accolades and the 11th of her storied career, the most among any active pitcher in the league. Meanwhile, Augustine earns her first Big South weekly honor of her career.

A product of Dunnsville, Va., McCarthy enjoyed a marvelous final week of her senior season, pitching to a 2.26 ERA in 21.2 innings en route to posting a 3-0 record. McCarthy gave up just seven runs, all but one run came in one inning of the Liberty series, and 11 hits while limiting opponents to a .153 batting average.

In game one of Longwood’s final regular season series at Radford, McCarthy took a perfect game into the seventh inning and tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Lancers to a 1-0 win. In game three of the series, the senior southpaw gave up just one run on one hit in five innings and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning.

A product of Warrenton, Va., Augustine played a key role in Longwood’s series win at Liberty and series sweep at Radford, hitting .333 (7-for-21) with five RBI and three runs scored. The senior led Longwood’s offense with a .619 slugging percentage and was second on the squad with her .440 on-base percentage batting in the leadoff role.

Augustine hit two home runs in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep at Radford, including a grand slam in a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning in the final game of the series. Augustine also hit a solo home run in front of a national TV audience in the first game Saturday afternoon that proved to be the difference in the 5-0 shutout.

Winners in eight of their last nine games, the red-hot Lancers (24-26) are in a stretch of 10 days off before the start of the Big South Tournament, hosted by Longwood May 10-13. The blue and white will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament and await their opening round opponent following the conclusion of the regular season.
