FREDERICKSBURG – Construction is finishing two months ahead of schedule on a $2.4 million project that replaced a structurally deficient bridge over Fox Creek in Gloucester County.
Route 662 (Allmondsville Road) has re-opened to traffic at Fox Creek after crews opened the new bridge.
Construction had been underway since March 28, 2017, to build a new two-lane bridge over the creek.
The previous bridge was built in 1937. Due to its condition, the bridge was limited to carrying vehicles weighing 3 tons or less. The new bridge does not have a posted weight limit.
The new bridge is a concrete structure as opposed to the previous bridge, which had a timber deck and foundation.
An average of 140 vehicles cross the bridge daily over Fox Creek on Allmondsville Road, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation traffic count.
