Planned Community for Disabled Adults

Vanguard LandingA nonprofit community for intellectually disabled adults is being planned in Virginia Beach. Organizers of the planned Vanguard Landing community are in the processing of acquiring 75 acres bordering Heritage Park. Founder and executive director Debbie Dear tells The Virginian-Pilot that families want more and better options for adults with intellectual disabilities. She says there aren’t enough group homes or other places where these adults can thrive. At Vanguard Landing, intellectually disabled adults would live in cottages and work in self-sustaining on-site businesses, such as gardens and an equestrian center. Organizers have raised about $3 million for the project so far. The donations include cash, pledges, building sponsorships and donations of services. Dear says she expects more will be raised when the land purchase is completed.
