Public Comment needed on Grading Formula

Virginia Dept of EducationThe Virginia Board of Education has pushed to November a vote on criteria that will be used to grade public schools. The board has been trying to solidify a grading formula since the General Assembly passed a law requiring schools to be assigned letter grades A through F. Schools will be judged largely based on standardized tests and points will be assigned from different categories that will add up to the grades. The board is asking for public comment. It plans to look at how test scores from transfer students and others with limited English proficiency should be factored in. Some local school leaders oppose the letter grades, arguing they don’t reflect a school’s progress or challenges. Media outlets report the grades are scheduled to debut next October.
