FREDERICKSBURG – Route 653 (Burruss Lane) in Caroline County has reopened to traffic at the bridge over Reedy Creek.

Last month, Burruss Lane was closed to through traffic just west of Route 301 (Richmond Turnpike) to improve the structurally deficient bridge. The bridge over Reedy Creek is located on Burress Lane between Route 662 (Gregory Road) and Route 652 (Signboard Road) in the Ruther Glen area of the county.

In two weeks, VDOT crews replaced the existing bridge’s steel beams, deck with new timber, steel and guardrail, while also making repairs to the vertical walls and foundation.  New bridge delineators were also installed. Bridge delineators are small traffic signs to provide night reflection and help guide traffic along the improved bridge.

Built in 1958, the existing bridge had a posted weight restriction of 9 tons. With these improvements to the bridge, the current weight limit posting signs will be removed after final inspection next week.

Burruss Lane carries an average of 120 vehicles a day, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.
