William and MaryFormer U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is donating his personal papers to the College of William and Mary. The college also announced Thursday that Gates and his wife, Rebecca, have committed nearly $1.5 million from their estate to support scholarships for undergraduate students studying international relations and global studies. An additional $50,000 has been designated to catalogue and transfer Gates’ papers to a digital format. Gates currently is the college’s honorary chancellor. He received his undergraduate degree in history from William and Mary in 1965. The papers include Gates’ service at the CIA, the National Security Council under four presidents, as president of Texas A&M University, and as defense secretary and his current role.
