Virginia Commonwealth University is receiving a $2.4 million grant to study ways to improve the academic performance of middle-school students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Officials say the Richmond school was awarded the grant from the Institute of Education Sciences. That’s the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education. VCU says the four-year grant will be used to compare two different types of school-based interventions to help the students. One helps students learn how to organize their materials, plan ahead and manage time effectively. The other helps students stay on task and focused, and to complete homework more efficiently. The work will be done through the psychology department in VCU’s College of Humanities and Sciences.
