LANCASTER CO., Va. – On Saturday (December 1) at approximately 9:36 p.m., a checking
detail was being conducted by Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police in
the westbound lanes of Route 3 (Mary Ball Road) near Route 605 (Pinkardsville Road) in
Lancaster County.
The state police preliminary investigation reveals a silver 1998 Honda Accord driven by, David
Wayne Walton, 45, of West Point, Va., approached the checking detail and stopped for the
Lancaster County Sheriff’s Deputy. As the Deputy was checking the status of Walton’s
suspended license, Walton sped away from the checking detail at a high rate of speed. A
pursuit was initiated by Lancaster Sheriff’s Office.
While fleeing from law enforcement in excess of 90 mph in the posted 35 mph zone, Walton
entered the intersection of Route 3 (Mary Ball Road) and Route 600 (Courthouse Road) and
struck head-on a 2016 Acura TLX sedan traveling southbound on Courthouse Road attempting
to turn left onto eastbound Route 3.
Walton died at the scene.
The driver of the Acura, a female, 61, of Lancaster, Va., was flown to VCU Medical Center for
treatment of serious injuries.
Alcohol is being considered as a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
