NEWPORT NEWS – On today’s date, at approximately 6:02 AM, Virginia State Trooper J. Napier stopped to render assistance to a motorist involved in an accident, when his vehicle was struck from behind.
The single vehicle accident occurred on the Victory Boulevard overpass, at Interstate 64, in the city of Newport News. Ms. Hillary Sweeney, the driver of an S-10 Blazer, had spun out of control due to the icy conditions on the roadway, and ended on top of the grassy median. Trooper Napier was called to investigate the accident and pulled up behind Ms. Sweeney, with blue lights and hazard lights activated. While Trooper Napier attempted to check on Ms. Sweeney, a Ford F-150, driven by Kenneth Smoker, struck the Troopers vehicle from behind, pushing the Troopers vehicle into the Blazer. Both the Trooper and Ms. Sweeney were outside of their vehicles when the crash occurred.
Mr. Smoker refused treatment at the scene, and was charged with Reckless Driving/Failure to maintain control.
