NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Supreme Court will hear an appeal over whether the state’s Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court should release a database of court case information.
The Daily Press reports that the state Supreme Court issued its decision on Sept. 19, about two weeks after lawyers representing the newspaper argued that the court should hear the case.
The case stemmed from a lawsuit filed by The Daily Press against OES in August 2015, which sought the release of the database.
In February, Newport News Circuit Court Judge David Pugh ruled that OES did not have to release the database because it wasn’t the true custodian of the record.
The office of the solicitor general, which represents OES, didn’t immediately respond to the newspaper’s request for comment.
