FREDERICKSBURG – Route 617 (White House Lane) in King and Queen County has re-opened to through traffic today after Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews installed a temporary bridge over Exol Swamp.
White House Lane had been closed at the bridge since June 2017, when a bridge inspection found deterioration in key support elements. VDOT closed the bridge immediately for motorist safety. The bridge had previously been posted with a 3-ton vehicle weight restriction.
Traffic can now use a single-lane temporary bridge. The temporary bridge has no posted weight restriction and is open to all vehicles carrying up to the legal load limit of 40 tons.
A new, permanent replacement bridge is fully funded using State of Good Repair program funds, which are targeted for deficient bridges and pavement. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2021, but the agency will seek to accelerate the project schedule. The previous bridge was built in 1965.
Approximately 75 vehicles a day cross the bridge on White House Lane, according to a 2016 VDOT traffic count.
