Virginia’s push to expand rail service across the state is picking up speed with $23 million in federal grants, part of which will improve passenger accessibility to trains at Amtrak’s Staples Mill Road station in Henrico County.
The funds also will replace track and improve rail crossings on the Buckingham Branch short-line freight railroad between Gordonsville and Richmond; establish a new train stop in Bedford; and boost safety by developing technology to prevent trains from derailing.
The Federal Railroad Administration announced the grants on Tuesday.
