NASCAR officials on Tuesday confirmed circulating rumors that the Cup Series would no longer make one of its two annual stops in Richmond starting next season.

With the addition of a Cup Series — NASCAR’s premier series — race in Mexico City in 2025, that means one stop on the schedule had to go.

Richmond Raceway lose its race traditionally held in the spring at the Henrico County 3/4-mile track. The second race — traditionally held in the summer — remains on NASCAR’s 2025 schedule, which will be officially released later this week.

There has been speculation as to how much longer Richmond, a twice-annual staple on the Cup Series schedule since 1959 — minus the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic season, when only one race was included on the makeshift empty grandstand schedule — would continue to host both NASCAR events.
