Work has started to close the final gap on a longstanding bottleneck that’s plagued shippers hoping to move cargo from Hampton Roads’ ports to the nation’s Interstate 95 artery, and that looks to be a boon for rural New Kent County, as well.
The wider highway would connect with the recently widened section of I-64 between Newport News and Williamsburg, as well as the six lanes that carry traffic between Richmond and Bottoms Bridge.
When the work is completed in the spring of 2028, the total bill will probably exceed $685 million.
