More than 82,000 American service members are considered missing in action from various conflicts through the decades, including more than 1,200 from Virginia.

On Friday, the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond observed National POW/MIA Recognition Day by placing gold stars next to the names of six service members from Virginia whose remains, now accounted for, have been identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
