The remnants of the powerful system that caused extensive flooding and damage across the southeast U.S. churned northward Friday, triggering widespread power outages across western and central Virginia. Weakened from hurricane strength overnight, Tropical Storm Helene also touched off multiple flood and tornado warnings across the state.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin said Friday the storm had caused at least one death in the state, from a tree fall in Craig County, northwest of Roanoke.

Youngkin also said there had been 50 swift water rescues so far, mostly in Southwest Virginia.

Meanwhile, just across the state line in Tennessee, Virginia State Police helicopters helped evacuate approximately 54 patients from the roof of Unicoi County Hospital.
