The School Board in West Point agreed to pay $575,000 in a settlement to a former teacher who was fired after he would not use a transgender student’s preferred pronouns.

Peter Vlaming, who taught French at West Point High School in the King William County town before he was fired in December 2018, has said he could not in good conscience use male pronouns for a student he saw as female because it would have violated his religious beliefs.

In addition to the payment, the West Point School Board cleared Vlaming’s firing from his record.
