The lawyers who secured the acquittal of Wavie Jones — one of three on trial in the death of Irvo Otieno — were paid $872,000 by the state of Virginia.

The sum was released by the Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services in response to a records request from the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The agency runs Central State Hospital, where Otieno died in March 2023 while in the throes of a mental health crisis.
