The U.S. Department of Justice says Virginia’s process for cleaning up voter rolls has holes that keep U.S. citizens from voting, arguing that a federal judge’s order to reinstate 1,600 people to the state’s voter rolls should stand. U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar on Tuesday asked Chief Justice John Roberts to reject Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares‘ request to block a lower court’s order directing Virginia to restore those individuals’ voter registration and to halt the daily cleanup of state voter rolls that Gov. Glenn Youngkin ordered in August.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the lower court order over the weekend. If Roberts does not block Friday’s order by U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles, the state would have to comply by Wednesday.
