Virginia’s health department has suffered from years of financial mismanagement. But the board that oversees the state agency is encouraged by the corrections the department’s leaders are making.
On Thursday, the State Board of Health met for the first time since a state government watchdog released a blistering report saying the Virginia Department of Health has struggled to pay its bills on time and maintain a workforce of financial and administrative employees.
Dr. Karen Shelton, who oversees the department as state health commissioner, told the board that it is hiring new leaders and installing new financial guardrails. Two members of the board expressed confidence in her ability to right the ship.
