Virginia’s behavioral health reform program would get nearly $70 million more under budget amendments Gov. Glenn Youngkin is proposing.
The biggest chunk, some $35 million, would go to pay for staffing hospital emergency rooms with special conservators of the peace.
The idea is to free police officers and sheriff’s deputies from accompanying people in mental health crisis while they await assessment and treatment.
