FREDERICKSBURG – Route 3 travelers who cross the Robert O. Norris Bridge should expect delays during the evening rush hour due to emergency bridge work resulting from a citizen notification.

Crews will be removing an existing strip of steel edge forming under the bridge for the safety of watercraft below the bridge.

The Route 3 eastbound lane closure will begin at 3:30 p.m.

A pilot truck will be used to guide drivers through the work zone one direction at a time.

Flaggers will be positioned at each end of the bridge to stop traffic while a pilot truck leads traffic from the opposing direction.

Norris Bridge is currently safe for travel. The removal of the steel edge forming does not affect the structural capacity of Norris Bridge. This work is to ensure the continued safety of marine watercraft on the Rappahannock River.

The Norris Bridge connects Middlesex and Lancaster counties over the Rappahannock River.

Message boards will be posted at the bridge approaches to alert travelers to the work zone.

Updates will be available on 511.vdot.virginia.gov. Travelers can also download the free mobile 511Virginia app, or call 511 from any phone in Virginia.
