FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has named Greg Henion, P.E., as its new Fredericksburg District Engineer.

Henion has more than 32 years of transportation and engineering experience in public and private sector roles. Most recently, Henion has served since 2022 as the statewide VDOT Structure and Bridge Engineer. He was responsible for the inspection and integrity of more than 21,000 bridges, culverts and other structures across Virginia.

As Fredericksburg District Engineer, Henion will lead the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operations of more than 12,000 road miles across 14 counties.

VDOT’s Fredericksburg District includes the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford in the Fredericksburg area; Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties in the Northern Neck; and Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties in the Middle Peninsula. VDOT is also administering several projects within the City of Fredericksburg, which maintains its road network in the city limits. The district has a combined population of more than 550,000 people.

Henion will lead more than 530 VDOT employees working in the district, and he started work in his new position today.

“Greg’s broad base of experience across VDOT and in the private sector, as well as the leadership roles he has held, have prepared him well to take this next step as the leader of the Fredericksburg District,” said VDOT Chief Deputy Commissioner Cathy McGhee, P.E. “His expertise as a structural engineer will also guide two of the largest projects in the district, the upcoming replacement of the Robert O. Norris, Jr., Bridge connecting Lancaster and Middlesex counties, and improvements to the Falmouth Bridge linking the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County.”

Henion is returning to VDOT’s Fredericksburg District. He joined VDOT in 2011 as the Fredericksburg District Construction Engineer and later worked as District Maintenance Engineer before being named statewide VDOT Deputy Construction Engineer in 2015.

Before joining VDOT, Henion worked for more than 15 years in the private sector as a transportation project manager.

“It was an honor to start my VDOT career in Fredericksburg District and I look forward to continuing to serve the travelers of this region,” Henion said.

“Whether you live in the district, operate a business here, stop for a visit, or are just passing through, you deserve a transportation network that is safe and reliable, and that furthers economic opportunity and our shared quality of life in the Commonwealth. I’m thrilled to be back in Fredericksburg District and build on the progress already underway to carry out $1.4 billion in transportation improvements in the district in the next six fiscal years,” Henion said.

Henion is a graduate of Bucknell University and holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He is a graduate of the Virginia Executive Institute and is a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Committee on Bridges and Structures.

He is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia.
