he Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources says there have been 14 reports of vulture deaths in Virginia since July that are suspected to have been caused by avian influenza, or bird flu. Nine of the reports happened in October.

According to the DWR, preliminary testing indicates the likely cause of the deaths is H5N1 bird flu, a highly pathogenic virus that’s been circulating in wild birds in North America since late 2021, causing sporadic deaths in wild birds, domestic poultry and dairy cattle.
