Virginia Speaker of the House Don Scott, D-Portsmouth, expected Democrats to gain a few seats in Tuesday’s elections.

Instead, the party picked up 13 seats formerly held by Republicans, securing a 64-36 advantage in the House of Delegates.

The party also flipped all three statewide seats in Tuesday night’s elections, electing Democrats for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.

When the General Assembly returns to the Capitol in January, Democrats will have the power and the numbers to push their agenda through.
