Warsaw, Va. — Northern Neck Electric Cooperative is proud to award $7,500 in scholarships to four local high school seniors through the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives. Since 2001, the VMDAEC Education Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than 1,350 scholarships totaling $1.4 million to students pursuing postsecondary education.
Congratulations to this year’s recipients of Worth Hudson scholarships from the Northern Neck:
- Kalayah West, King George High School – $2,500
- Kearstin Ferguson, Westmoreland High School – $2,000
- Anna Cox, King George High School – $1,500
- Aliyah Bhatti, King George High School – $1,500
The scholarships are named in honor of Worth M. Hudson, who was the Foundation’s first chairman and former chairman of the board of directors of Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative in Chase City, Va.
The scholarship program is supported by private donations and received a significant boost in 2018 with the launch of the “Keeping the Lights On” commemorative Virginia license plate. Proceeds from the plates, which costs drivers $25 per year ($35 per year for personalized plates) directly fund the scholarship program.
Awarded to high school or home-schooled seniors who reside in households served by NNEC, scholarships are awarded by the VMDAEC Education Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation’s board of directors select recipients based on these weighted criteria: financial need at 40%, academic achievement at 40% and personal statement at 20%. An applicant must be entering his or her first semester at a postsecondary or technical/trade school in fall 2026. Scholarship funds, which will be sent directly to the educational institution, must be used toward tuition, student fees, room and board, or textbooks.
