The United States is seeing rising reports of an illness that causes diarrhea, but the Virginia Department of Health says there is no evidence that suggests the commonwealth is experiencing an outbreak.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it received 843 reports of cases of cyclosporiasis. The infection is caused by a parasite called Cyclospora and is often transmitted to humans through contaminated fruits and vegetables.

According to the VDH, cyclosporiasis is not transmitted directly from person to person.
