The brother of Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith was taken into custody Tuesday after allegedly stealing his brother’s truck and leading police on a pursuit that ended with his arrest at Clymore Elementary School in Fort Defiance.

Ronald William Smith, 41, of Churchville, was taken to Augusta Health after he initially refused to exit the vehicle and had shouldered a hay spear like a long rifle.

Ronald William Smith is charged with seven offenses and is being held without bond in Middle River Regional Jail in Verona. He is charged with obstruction of justice, attempted aggravated murder, felony destruction of property, driving under the influence of drugs, misdemeanor destruction of property, felony eluding, and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Sheriff Smith alluded to substance abuse problems his brother suffers from in a statement.
