The much-beloved Boys & Girls Clubs where generations of kids have found a haven and the day care centers that moms and dads rely on to provide a safe place for children are clashing over legislation that would exempt after-school programs from licensing by the state.
At issue, the day care centers say, is that with licensing — the licensing that they’re subject to — comes compliance with state safety and health regulations.
On the other hand, says Sen. Christie New Craig, R-Chesapeake, the day care centers “are fixated on competition” and worried about losing paying customers to the clubs, with their modest one-time registration fees.
