Believe it or not- in more than one out of every one hundred crashes involving a commercial vehicle, defective brakes are a factor.
As a part of Brake Safety Week in Virginia, the DMV Law Enforcement Division is supporting the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance with inspection and enforcement of brake systems and components for commercial vehicles. Brake Safety Week is an enforcement and outreach effort aimed at commercial motor vehicle and driver brake-related compliance and safety awareness. In 2023, there were 5,785 crashes involving commercial motor vehicles. Of those crashes, 65 commercial vehicles were recorded as having defective brakes.
