Armed with an endorsement by former President Donald Trump, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Hung Cao cruised to a Republican primary victory on Tuesday, clinching the party’s nomination to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., in November.

Cao defeated four opponents in a race defined by his superior name recognition after a competitive congressional race two years ago in blue Northern Virginia and a significant fundraising advantage.
