Richmond, VA – June 24, 2025 – Chesapeake Bank brought a taste – and the weight – of the Chesapeake Bay to the heart of Virginia’s capital on Saturday, June 14, when the community bank unveiled what is believed to be the world’s largest crab cake in celebration of its 125th anniversary as an independent community bank.
Hand-crafted in collaboration with Richmond seafood market Shoreline, the colossal crab cake tipped the scales at over 400 pounds. The oversized seafood sensation measured a whopping 37 inches in diameter and stood 9 inches tall making its dramatic debut at The Diamond just before the Richmond Flying Squirrels game.
“We wanted to do something unforgettable to celebrate 125 years as an independent community bank, and what better way than bringing a taste of the Chesapeake to Richmond to highlight our roots” said Chesapeake Bank’s Assistant Vice President, Marketing Director Matthew Suttmiller. “This celebration was about more than just a world record – it was a way to bring our people together, celebrate our heritage, and thank the Richmond community for being such an important part of our journey and growth.”
The crab cake was ceremoniously unveiled before first pitch, with first bites served up after the first inning and shared with fans starting at the top of the second. The historic creation served as a delicious tribute to Chesapeake Bank’s roots on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and its longstanding commitment to community-first banking, better known as “The Chesapeake Way.”
Founded in 1900 in Virginia’s Northern Neck, Chesapeake Bank has grown into a strong, stable and trusted community partner serving the greater Richmond and Chesterfield areas for nearly 15 years. The Taste of the Chesapeake crab cake celebration is one of many events planned to mark this milestone year for the bank.
