Across the state, Virginia public schools’ rate of chronic absenteeism — meaning missing more than 10% of the school year for any reason — nearly doubled after prolonged school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Virginia public schools saw a 16.6% reduction in chronic absenteeism between the 2022-23 school year and last school year, landing at a 16.1% chronic absenteeism rate.
