Richmond County, VA – Delegate Hillary Pugh Kent today issued a statement in recognition of Commercial Waterman Safety Week, honoring Virginia’s hardworking watermen and women who dedicate their lives to one of the Commonwealth’s oldest and most vital industries.

Earlier this year, the General Assembly approved House Joint Resolution 473 (HJ473), sponsored by Delegate Kent, officially designating this week as Commercial Waterman Safety Week.

“Our watermen play a critical role in sustaining local economies, preserving a way of life, and supplying seafood that reaches tables across Virginia and beyond. Their work is tough, dangerous, and essential—and ensuring their safety must always remain a top priority,” said Delegate Kent.

The designated week serves as a reminder of the risks commercial watermen face daily, including unpredictable weather, challenging working conditions, and the physical demands of the job. It also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of safety measures and training that help prevent accidents and save lives.

“As we celebrate Commercial Waterman Safety Week, let us commit to supporting policies, training, and practices that ensure our watermen can continue their work safely,” added Delegate Kent. “Their resilience and dedication embody the best of Virginia’s traditions, and I am proud to honor them this week.”
