Is the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles on the move, or does the state agency plan instead to renovate its headquarters in Richmond for the first time since its construction in 1979 and rent out available space to other state agencies?
The agency received permission in the revised state budget to spend $16 million that it raises in fees to renovate its headquarters on West Broad Street to consolidate its operations and lease unused space to other state agencies to generate revenue. DMV already received permission in the new two-year budget last year to spend $14.8 million for specific renovations to the building, but it’s not clear how much of that work has been done as the agency explores its options.
