The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS) invites the public to pop-in for a pop-up “History Lovers’ Book Sale” on Saturday, May 2, Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day. A special pre-sale day for LVHS members only will also be held on Friday, May 1, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. New members may join at the door for $35 annual dues.
The sale will feature more than 500 like-new and gently-used non-fiction books related to U.S. and world history from ancient to modern times, biographies, politics, military, and more. Most items will be priced at $5 or less, according to LVHS executive director Karen Hart. In particular, there will be large selections about Virginia, the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War II, and 20th century leaders and events. Some specially-priced genealogy and local history books will also be available.
“The majority of the books have been donated from the personal collection of a generous LVHS supporter who is a voracious reader,” said Hart. “This gift was expressly given as a way to share his passion for history with others and to allow LVHS to raise funds for our library and museum programs and services. Our volunteers have been sorting the hundreds of books into several categories for the convenience of shoppers and I think this fascinating assortment of history and culture will offer something interesting for everyone.”
The book sale will be held at the new Dunton Library for Genealogy & History on the LVHS campus at 8346 Mary Ball Road in Lancaster. Visitors will have the opportunity, too, to tour the library and meet research volunteers, but full research assistance will not be available during the event. LVHS is also not accepting additional book donations at this time, thank you. For more information, visit LancasterVaHistory.org or call 804-462-7280.
