FYI Northern Neck is a monthly lecture series that highlights subjects of interest to the residents of the Northern Neck. On Thursday, February 15th, at 7 PM, the February lecture will be held in the parish hall of St. James Episcopal Church, located at 15870 Kings Highway, Montross.
Reverend Dr. Christopher Agnew presents a captivating lecture that examines the extraordinary life of Susan Jane Broun. Born on December 19, 1832, Broun’s journey and achievements in Westmoreland County are meticulously chronicled. In 1856, she married Edwin Hutt, a widower thirteen years her senior. It was during this time that she became deeply concerned about the lack of literacy among the children residing in Westmoreland County as well as in neighboring Richmond County. Driven by her unwavering commitment, Susan embarked on a mission to provide a Christian education to all children, irrespective of race, in the Northern Neck.
Reverend Agnew will narrate the numerous accomplishments and historical significance of this remarkable 19th-century advocate for learning and religious education in the Northern Neck and her role in the founding of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Nomini Grove.
