The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS) will host a musical program, “American Traditions: A Sampler of Three Centuries of Historical Folk Songs, Ballads, and Dance Tunes,” by the group Ampersand on Wednesday, July 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Lebanon Baptist Church in Lancaster. A $10 cash admission fee is requested at the door to benefit LVHS and offset event costs. Families are welcome and children will be admitted free with an adult.

Ampersand, comprised of core members Beth Lawton and Dick Hogle plus Topher Lawton and Dave Moore, performs American folk and historical music with vocal harmonies and a variety of traditional string instruments such as guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, cello, and hammered dulcimer. B. Lawton states, “Ampersand is a group of musicians who combine their love of music with a fascination with history, focusing on music that everyday people would have heard, sung, and played, and exploring how traditional folk tunes weave through the centuries and decades. We find great joy in bringing this music to modern ears.” She and Hogle have collegiate backgrounds in History and American Culture Studies along with more than twenty-five years of musical experience.

Based out of Denton, MD, Ampersand has performed at numerous national, state, and local historic sites and parks, including several visits to Lancaster County. LVHS executive director Karen Hart said, “Ampersand provides high-quality music that is lively and entertaining as well as educational for all ages. In connection with Independence Day and NNK250 programming toward the nation’s semiquincentennial, we are excited to bring the group back for a new program celebrating America’s musical heritage from our country’s founding years to the early 20th century.”
