On a blustery Friday morning golfers took to the links at historic Kingsmill Plantation Golf Course in Williamsburg to raise funds for Rappahannock Community College’s Educational Foundation Inc.’s (RCC EFI) Student Emergency Assistance Fund.
Twenty-eight teams totaling 112 players, numerous sponsors, volunteers, and supporters helped raise more than $23,000, netting $18,000 for RCC EFI. The funds raised will allow the Foundation to fully endow the Ruth Greene Student Success Fund in perpetuity. The Fund helps students who otherwise might have to decide between gas for their car to get to class or the ability to purchase a textbook.
Ruth Greene, a long time and much-loved RCC professor set up the fund upon the death of her mother in 2019. She asked for donations in her mother’s memory to be given to the fund to help RCC students with basic needs and emergency assistance. Ruth unexpectedly passed away in 2020 and family and friends showed their love for Ruth by donating to the fund. “Ruth saw first-hand the impact of emergency assistance to help a student attend and excel in their classes,” said Sarah Pope, Executive Director of RCC’s Educational Foundation Inc.
The tournament was organized by Gloucester High School and RCC dual-enrolled senior Andrew White who wanted to give back to RCC. White coordinated all aspects of the tournament from securing the location to soliciting sponsors, collecting donations for gift bags and prizes to registering teams and players. White and RCC thank all those who made the tournament such a success.
