As the Virginia General Assembly session passes Tuesday’s procedural midpoint, some of the Democratic majority’s priorities — such as a proposed ban on assault-style weapons and creation of a legal market to sell marijuana — appear destined for vetoes by Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

Cannabis

The House and Senate backed bills to set up a legal market for marijuana sales. Youngkin has indicated he is not interested in pursuing a legal market.

Cocktails to-go

The House and Senate backed bills to let businesses continue to sell cocktails to-go on a permanent basis. The permission to sell such cocktails — granted during the pandemic — is currently scheduled to sunset on July 1.

Youngkin can either sign, veto or seek to amend bills that reach his desk.

Democrats, with slim majorities in the House of Delegates and state Senate, do not have the votes to override a veto.
