FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Maintenance work will suspend ferry service in the Northern Neck during several days this week.
Service on the Merry Point Ferry in Lancaster County will be suspended only on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Service for this ferry will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 4. The Merry Point Ferry crosses the western end of the Corrotoman River on Route 604.
Service on the Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland County will be suspended from Tuesday, Sept. 3-Saturday, Sept. 7. Service will resume on Monday, Sept. 9. The Sunnybank Ferry crosses the Little Wicomico River on Route 644.
Crews will be painting and improving the condition of the ramps that vehicles use to drive on and off the ferry vessels. For the Sunnybank Ferry ramp, service is being suspended for five days because more extensive maintenance is needed to improve the ramp’s condition, while maintenance on the Merry Point Ferry ramp will consist of largely painting, which only requires a one-day service suspension to complete.
The Merry Point and Sunnybank ferries are free ferry services operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). They save travelers around 20 minutes of travel time when compared with the available land route. Each ferry can carry a maximum of six passengers and 16 tons.
