As of Thursday afternoon, Northern Neck Electric Cooperative (NNEC) has restored nearly all outages related to the severe storm from Wednesday, June 26th. The storm impacts stretched from Stafford down to Lancaster County.
This severe storm began to impact the Northern Neck region on Wednesday afternoon. The height of the widespread outages saw more than 2,150 members without power. Strong winds with peak gusts approaching 70 mph and rain caused extensive damage in some areas consistent with microbursts, including trees falling on power lines and poles needing to be replaced or repaired.
“Our restoration crews endured rain and wind, and dealt with visibility constraints, to work throughout the night to bring power back on for all members,” said Brad Hicks, president and CEO of NNEC. “I am proud of their dedication to their neighbors, their friends, and our co-op family. I know how frustrating losing power can be, but please know how hard our teams work to get it back on as quickly and as safely as possible.”
“Safety is the most important thing at Northern Neck Electric Cooperative,” said Hunter Greenlaw, chairman of board of directors of NNEC. “We want all of the employees to be able to go home to their families, and we want our members to be safe as well.”
As the summer storm season continues, NNEC encourages the public to make a plan and to be prepared.
- Make a Family Plan: Discuss what to do if a storm hits, including where to go in your home to stay safe (like a basement or an interior room away from windows).
- Create an Emergency Kit: Put together a kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, necessary medications, and important documents.
