The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze transportation issues at the various intersections, with a focus on congestion mitigation, safety improvements, and enhance pedestrian, bicycle and transit access.

The potential improvements presented are only preliminary designs. The recommendations are not scheduled or funded as construction projects at this time. The study partners may consider the improvements for possible advancement through future local, regional, state and federal transportation funding programs.

Community input received through online surveys in 2023 and 2024 helped the team identify existing issues along the study corridor and develop recommendations for potential improvements.

As part of the next phase of the study, the public is invited to comment on the proposed improvements.

You can submit written comments at the meeting or submit them by July 18, 2024 to Cassy Lord, Planning Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405. You may also email your comments to fred.comments@vdot.virginia.gov. Please reference “Route 1 Pipeline” in the subject line.

This study is being conducted as part of the Project Pipeline program, which was created by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Project Pipeline is a performance-based planning program to identify cost-effective solutions to multimodal transportation needs in Virginia. Project Pipeline is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), in collaboration with VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

This study is expected to be complete in summer 2024. The final plan will provide a multimodal investment strategy that can be used to seek and secure funding through programs including SMART SCALE, revenue sharing, interstate funding, and others.
