At least one Republican, Rep. Rob Wittman, R-1st, is defending Virginia Commonwealth University, which stands to lose $26 million annually if the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, follows through with cutting funding for medical research.
Wittman wrote a letter to the acting director of the NIH, saying that caps on indirect spending would have “dramatic and immediate” effects on research and the local economies surrounding each university.
